NEA President says Trump ‘creates fear in children, and that is unforgivable’

NEA President Lily Eskelsen García on Friday said the country is facing “a reckless, irresponsible administration that creates chaos and confusion.” Speaking to the National Press Club, she said President Trump “creates fear in children, and that is unforgivable.” Educators, she said, at times have to “comfort crying children because they are afraid of their president.”

Trump’s plan to slash federal education funding is ‘reckless and wrong for students,’ NEA says

Responding to reports that the Trump administration plans to cut $10.6 billion from federal education initiatives, NEA President Lily Eskelsen García called President Trump’s priorities “reckless and wrong for students and working families.” According to the Washington Post, the cuts would come from eliminating at least 22 programs, including “$1.2 billion for after-school programs that serve 1.6 million children, most of whom are poor, and $2.1 billion for teacher training and class-size reduction.”

NEA to new Congress: Now is time to renew commitment to public education

The National Education Association and its 3 million members are urging the 115th U.S. Congress to renew its commitment to students and public education, to govern by putting families ahead of partisan politics, and to resist the temptation to undermine the American vision of public education. “We also challenge Congress to take a bold stand against efforts by ideologues, corporations, billionaires and hedge fund managers to undermine and privatize public education and harm our students,” NEA President Lily Eskelsen García said in a statement.
