State’s AP participation and performance improve

A total of 21,910 graduates from the class of 2017 took 66,660 AP exams while in high school, an increase of 638 graduates and 3,694 exams from the prior year’s graduating class, according to the Department of Public Instruction. Their success rate — the percentage of exams scored three or higher on a five-point scale — was 25.5 percent, up 0.7 percent from 2016.

Wisconsin improves participation and performance on AP 

Wisconsin improved both public school student participation and performance on Advanced Placement (AP) exams administered last May. The state had a 5.7 percent increase in participation from the prior year with 42,783 public school students taking 72,637 AP exams, an increase of 2,326 student test-takers. Wisconsin students had 65.9 percent of their exams scored three or higher compared to 56.0 percent nationally. The exams are scored on a scale of one through five, with scores of three or higher generally receiving college credit, advanced standing, or both at many colleges and universities.

Advanced Placement participation grew 10% in 10 years

Wisconsin public school growth in the Advanced Placement (AP) program includes a 10 percent increase over 10 years in the percentage of graduates earning a qualifying score that gives them a head start on postsecondary studies.

Advanced Placement participation continues to grow

Wisconsin experienced another increase in Advanced Placement (AP) participation, with an additional 2,457 students taking exams in the 2015-16 school year compared to the prior school year. Nationally, 2.3 million public school students took just over 4 million AP exams in the 38 tested subjects, a 5.3 percent increase in student participation from the prior year compared to Wisconsin’s 6.5 percent jump. Wisconsin has experienced steady growth in the AP program over the years and dramatic growth from 20 years ago.
