Walker’s budget proposes to cut Wisconsin’s pioneering farm-to-school program

In 2009, Wisconsin was one of the first states in the nation to create a full-time farm-to-school coordinator, whose job was to connect local farmers with cafeterias in local schools. Supporters of the program call it a huge success by any measure. But Governor Scott Walker’s proposed budget cuts both the position of farm-to-school coordinator and the advisory council. In the state House, Madison Democrat Melissa Sargent says this proposal is extremely shortsighted.

Upgrades from referendum make major difference for Sauk Prairie agriculture classes

Thanks to a successful 2014 school referendum and a grant, ag students, teachers, and a few animals, are a lot happier this year at Sauk Prairie High School. “The district gave a lot of consideration to my thoughts and ideas, as well as the students,” teacher Troy Talford, a member of WEAC Region 5, says in an article in the Sauk Prairie Eagle and wiscnews.com.

Black River Falls teacher Brad Markhardt helps launch ‘agtivity’ area for students

WEAC member Brad Markhardt, the Black River Falls High School agriculture teacher and FFA advisor, is getting some kudos from the local media for working with his students to create a unique “agtivity” area to foster agriculture education. The space, according to the Jackson County Chronicle, is an extension of the classroom and used for horticulture, conservation and animal science projects while also incorporating Native American culture.
